The Disconnection

Why We Learn Shahmukhi

The 1947 partition severed East Punjab’s tie to the script used by Sufi masters like Bulleh Shah and Waris Shah. Reclaiming this literary bridge is the only way to hear Sufi wisdom in the exact words as they were spoken.

The Foundations

Reasons to Learn Shahmukhi

I.

The Sufi Literature

When you master this script, you can read Waris Shah and Bulleh Shah without the dilution of transliteration.

Persian Connection

This program acts as the vital linguistic bridge for Gurmukhi readers to eventually master Persian.

Unlock administrative records of the Sikh Empire. The journey to the archives begins with scriptural proficiency.

Shahmukhi Course FAQ

Is this course suitable for beginners who don’t know Punjabi?

This masterclass is designed specifically for those who can already speak and understand Punjabi, and read Gurmukhi.

Can I learn Shahmukhi if I already know Gurmukhi?

Yes, this is the most common path for our students. If you know Gurmukhi, you already understand the sounds of Punjabi; you are simply learning a new visual code (the Perso-Arabic script) to represent those same sounds.

Will this help me read the Zafarnamah or Persian poetry?

Absolutely. Shahmukhi shares the same character base as the Persian alphabet<. By mastering this script, you are effectively learning the mechanics needed to read classical texts like the Zafarnamah and the works of Persian Sufi poets.

Where can I get the Shahmukhi Qaida?

We provide a digital version during the course. For a physical copy of our specialized Shahmukhi Qaida (published with Sikhlens), please visit our Publications section.
